In Nijmegen

Oldest City

Nijmegen is (supposedly) the oldest city in the Netherland (2000 yo). There are still many Roman ruins to see. It is situated next to the Waal which is what the Rijn (Rine river) becomes after flowing into the Netherlands. It is surrounded by forests where you can walk, or cycle with with your mountain bike.

Places to Stay

We can recommend (although never stayed ourselves).

Note that any place you can find in the city center as within walking distance of Restaurant Groenewoud (20+ minutes of walking).

Also you might find a nice Airbnb. If you want us to check if it’s in a good area just let us know. Use ‘Hotel Nijmegen Oost" in your favorite search engine. Don’t know if it’s legit? Mail us.

Where we Live

Our appartment is located on the Molenveldlaan, in the old Snijders barracks (kazerne in Dutch, which has more cachet than barracks). This area of Nijmegen is called “Nijmegen Oost”.

Getting around

Busses are operated by Breng (they have an app, but might be geo-locked). There is no Uber, ordering a taxi is still done by phone and then you wait 15 minutes (like in the old days). By far the easiest way to get around is to get a bike.

For biking, there is Bolt. The canonical source for renting a bike is this page on intonijmegen.nl - use ‘Translate this page’.
